Our Observations:

Chain Bar owned or affiliated with Miller Brewing. We were in basically the same bar in Jacksonville at the Jacksonville Ale House. Joni described it as a Fridays on steroids.

Rankings

Décor:6 - Basic neons, TV's and wood panneling.
Sports Atmosphere:5 - Many TV's (none big screen) pool tables but little else sports related
Menu:6 - OK selection but nothing out of the ordinary
Beer Selection:7 - Good draft selection - no local brews but some from other different countries (eg Italy)
Quality of Food:8 - Had salads - very well done
Staff:7 - friendly, professional- but nothing special
Clientele:5 - We were there during the day - mostly Disney World tourists

Our Observations:

Looks like a hole in the wall and I guess it is. Looks like it has not changed since the 60's. Loved it. Very small, intimate and very sports oriented. Nice down and dirty back patio.

Rankings

Décor:7.5 - Wood walls, old butcher block tables. Some memorabilia on walls. Not fancy to stay the least. Felt like an old basement
Sports Atmosphere:8.5 - Mixture of TV's, all on sports. Crowd into the Astros.
Menu:5.5 - Very basic bar food. Quesadeas very good.
Beer Selection:7 -11 drafts - 2 Texas beers.
Quality of Food:8 - Quesadeas very good. Thats all we had but other food looked good.
Staff:8 - Bartender very friendly & knowledgable, owner there (with cookies) and very into home team
Clientele:7.5 - HLocal crowd, mostlet there for the sports

Scholz Beer Garden

April 9th

LOCATION:

Austin, Texas

Our Observations:

For a different twist this top 25 sports bar is more of an old German beer tavern, complete with a large outdoor beer garten. Dating from the 1820's you could feel the old German spirit ooze from every crack in the old wood walls.

Rankings

Décor:8 - Again, more of a German feel with German signs and slogans. The outdoor garden was right out of Munich.
Sports Atmosphere:6.5 - Not a true sportsbar except for the dual 50" plasma screens right at the bar.
Menu:7.5 -Limited and featuring (guess) authentic German fare.
Beer Selection:7.5 Around 10 drafts including German, East European and Texas beers.
Quality of Food:8 - We had 2 kinds of German Schnitzel. Very tasty.
Staff:6 - Typical college girls were the only staff. Friendly but more into themselves.
Clientele:7.5 - Because of its proximity to both the State Capitol and Unniv. of Texas, the crowd was very diverse.

Green Valley Ranch

Our Observations:

Another different twist to the sports bar. A sportd book is where you go in a casino to bet the horses and any other sports bet imaginable. This was a great sports book with zillions of TV's, but it was typical. It had a grille right next to it and a nice but expensive bar. I wouldn't call it a top 25 sports bar but a lot of fun can be had here

Rankings

Décor:6 - Not really sports themed. More glitzy casino-ish.
Sports Atmosphere:7 - Again, not a true sportsbar but it was all about sports (and gambling).
Menu:7 - -Limitd menu, but other restaurants in the building.
Beer Selection:5 4 drafts including 1 local. Beer selection was not a priority here.
Quality of Food: - - We did not have time to eat.
Staff:7 - Limited, but we were ther at noon.
Clientele:6 - Not exactly a sports crowd. More of a betting crowd. Cared more about the bets than rooting for a team.

Majerle's Sports Bar

May 11th

LOCATION:

Phoenix, Arizona

Our Observations:

A typical small sports bar in Phoenix. It's claim to fame is it's owner, Dan Majerle, a long time Phoenix Sun. He shows up quite a bit here. Otherwise the place is nice but nothing out of the ordinary.

Rankings

Décor:7 - Some stuff on walls (Jerseys etc.)Especially Suns related.
Sports Atmosphere:6 - A few small flatscreens with sports on. No sound though. Juke box music. Waitresses not sports knowledgable. Crowd bland.
Menu:6 - -Limited menu. Typical fare.
Beer Selection:5 8 drafts including 1 local. Beer selection was not extensive to say the least.
Quality of Food: - - We did not have time to eat.
Staff:6 - Seemed like any bar USA. Polite but not overly friendly.
Clientele:6 - Some sports fans but not many for a Sunday full of sports.

McDuffy's Sports Bar

DATE:

May 17th

LOCATION:

Peoria, Arizona

Our Observations:

This bar was originally in Tempe but it is a whopper! Very large building with giant screens and numerous TV's in a large warehouse sized first floor. A balcony houses many tables and the game room. When we were there they also had horse racing on many screens (maybe due to the Preakness that was about to start. The essence of the new style sports bar.

Rankings

Décor:7 - Large warehouse, maybe to large as the stuff on the walls got lost.
Sports Atmosphere:8 - Lively and large crowd, especially for an afternoon.
Menu:7 - -Good choices on menu. Typical fare.
Beer Selection:6 Draft selection somewhat limited. We settled for Bud Light special since we were driving.
Quality of Food:8 - - Joni's corn dogs delicious. Our soup and sandwhiches very good.
Staff:7 - Very attentive though the place was packed. Dressed in spors themes but I doubt many were sports fans.
Clientele:8 - Most into the sports on the many TV's though the pickings were slim. Lots of racing fans.

This bar unfortunately got sacrificed to our driving schedule. We would have had to drive through LA on our way to our next golf course on a holiday Friday. NOT BLOODY LIKELY. Also, we went here on our last trip. We were sorry we couldn't stop. We remember it as being a fun bar, especially during an Angels game.

The best pure sports bar we ahve hit yet. This bar was built in the 40's and it is a shrine to Oakland Sports, especially the Raiders. The owners are fanatics and are always there. Great Place!

Rankings

Décor:9.5 - Looks small from outside but 4 or 5 different areas, each with multiple TV's Walls were full of stuff, alot of it from players and coaches who visit. No mistaking the bars purpose.
Sports Atmosphere:8 - We were ther in the afternoon but Tina the owner was rabid.
Menu:7 - -Good bar food menu but not unlimited choices. Enough variety to please most.
Beer Selection:7 A couple of local brews but not extensive.
Quality of Food:8 - - Soup and sandwhiches very good.
Staff:8 - Only saw owners who are there every day. Personal attention to detail.
Clientele:8 - Rabid sports fans, Many fan clubs, especially college football. Lots of regulars

Looked like a concrete bunker from the outside and not much better inside. Somewhat of a dump which is not all bad. Not much of a sports bar.

Sports Atmosphere:-6 - Some local sports memorabilia.

Beer Selection:-6 Limited but varied drafts. Good selection of bottles.
Quality of Food:-1 - Peanuts and Doritos.

Sports Atmosphere:-6 - A few pieces of memorabilia. Not dominant. Nothing else that says sports.
Menu:-6- -Basic sports bar fare, nothing great.
